Martha Stewart Obituary

Martha Culver Stewart, age 82, died at Greene-Point Nursing Home on Friday, November 28, 2008 after an extended illness. Martha was born on March 13, 1926, in Union Point, Georgia. She graduated from Union Point High School in 1943 and worked briefly at Southern Bell Telephone Co. in Atlanta. She also was employed by Chipman-Union Textiles in Union Point for eight years. Martha married James Russell Stewart in April of 1950, and moved to White Plains, Georgia. She became an active member of the White Plains Baptist Church and was involved in many school and community activities. She spent most of her life as a loving wife, mother and homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Marie Moody Culver and George Lawrence Culver, Sr. Mrs. Stewart is survived by her husband; a brother, George L. Culver, Jr., of Union Point, Georgia; two daughters, Sandra Vermillion (Barney) of Snellville, Georgia and Susan Hamner (Dwight) of Killen, Alabama; one son, James Russell Stewart, Jr. (Sarah) of Monroe, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Jason Baugh of Atlanta, Christopher Baugh of Sandy Springs, Daks Hamner (Heather) of Atlanta, Lindsay Hamner of Killen, April Cornwell (Larry) of Carnesville, Amber Ashe of Toccoa and James Russell Stewart, III of Athens; three great-grandchildren, Chloe Ashe, Emalee Cornwell and Anna Claire Cornwell; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors on Monday, December 1, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCommons Funeral Home in Greensboro. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the White Plains Baptist Church with Pastor Jason Lee and Rev. Dr. Norman Waldrip officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Mrs. Stewart''s nephews: Richard Stewart, Charles Stewart, and Ken Stewart of White Plains, Jim Pickering of Norcross, Bert Pickering of Atlanta, and Gary Pickering of Snellville. Interment at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Union Point will immediately follow the service. Anyone wishing to make a memorial donation may do so to the White Plains Baptist Church, P. O. Box 38, White Plains, Georgia 30678. The family wishes to thank Dr. Ensley and the staff of Greene-Point Nursing Home for the kindness and attention they showed to Martha during her illness.
