Marion Reid McCommons

Marion Reid McCommons, age 93, of Greensboro, Georgia died Monday, October 18, 2010 at her residence. She was born on February 17, 1917 in Clinch County in Homerville, GA to the late Robert Drew Reid and Kansas Peagler Reid. She graduated as valedictorian from Homerville Consolidated School in 1933 and graduated magna cum laude in three years from The Georgia State Womans College in Valdosta, GA. After college she moved to Greensboro where she started her career in teaching. "Miss Reid", as she was affectionately called by her students, started teaching at the age of nineteen and taught both English and Math at Greensboro High School. Mrs. McCommons had a lifelong love of flowers and a talent for arranging, drying and growing them. She was the wedding coordinator for many weddings in Greensboro and enjoyed interior decorating. Throughout her travels she collected many antiques that she used in decorating her home. She was a gracious hostess and enjoyed entertaining her friends and playing bridge. Mrs. McCommons was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro and Fidelis Sunday School Class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Howard McCommons in 1993; a daughter, Miriam McCommons; and siblings, Doris Holton, Helen Clark and Betty Williams. She is survived by a son, Stephen M. "Steve" McCommons and wife Trudy of Greensboro, GA; three grandchildren, William J. "Billy" McCommons and wife Ali of Greensboro, GA; Miriam McCarroll and husband Michael of Watkinsville, GA and Meredith Ethridge and husband Alan of Gray, GA; three great grandchildren, Will, Mac and Mary Claire McCommons; a number of nieces and a nephew, other relatives and friends. She is also survived by a very good friend and caretaker, Martha Hill.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Greenview Cemetery with Rev. Michael Hardy officiating. The family requests that any memorials be made to The First Baptist Church, 203 S. Main Street, Greensboro, GA 30642.
