Macon Caldwell Overton, Sr

Macon C. Overton, Sr., age 89, of Cumming, Georgia, died Saturday, July 25, 2009 at his residence. Born on May 31, 1920 in Union Point, Georgia, he was the son of the late Earl Wayne Overton, Sr. and Maude Irene Hallman Overton. Mr. Overton was a graduate of Union Point High School where he played on the school''s basketball team. He earned a degree in Business Administration from Draughon''s Business College in Atlanta, Georgia.

Mr. Overton began his distinguished, 44-year career with the IBM Corporation in 1940 in Atlanta. During WWII, he joined the U.S. Army to serve as Chief of Operations for an IBM machine records unit within the European Theatre of Operations. After the war, Mr. Overton resumed his career with IBM and held various executive positions across the Southeastern U.S. involving sales, marketing, and operations. Mr. Overton also served as Country General Manager for IBM''s World Trade Corporation operations in Singapore and Malaysia before returning to Atlanta to coordinate marketing support services for IBM''s National Accounts Division. Mr. Overton retired from IBM in 1984.

Throughout his career, Mr. Overton also proudly volunteered his time to serve in leadership roles for many civic and community organizations including various city Chambers of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club, the Rotary Club, the Boy Scouts of America, Junior Achievement, and the United Way. His favorite pastime activities included his love for hunting, fishing, boating, camping, tennis, and being with his family.

Mr. Overton was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Lois (Gloria) Forrester Overton, whom he married on October 23, 1942, and by his six children: Macon C. Overton, Jr. of Chattanooga, TN; Russell G. Overton and wife Sandy of Naples, FL; Elizabeth O. Ferguson and husband Doug of Suwanee, GA; Forest S. Overton and wife Suzanne of Alpharetta, GA; Rebecca A. Overton of Canton, GA; and Thomas M. Overton and wife Ana of Dunwoody, GA; and by his fifteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mr. Overton was preceded in death by his seven siblings: Earl Wayne Overton, Jr., Evelyn Irene Rhodes, Mamie Delle Maxwell, Attie Ruth George, Vesta Maude Newton, Margaret Aurelia May, and William McDurmond Overton.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. at the McCommons Chapel with Matthew Douglas Ferguson, Mr. Overton''s grandson, and the Rev. Steve Orehosky officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Union Point, GA. Before the funeral services commence, the family will receive relatives and friends from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Funeral Home.
