Mrs. Lucile Smith Phelps, 92, of Greensboro, Georgia passed away on March 16, 2002, at Greene Point Health Care Center of Union Point. She was born in Jackson County, Georgia on April 8, 1909, the daughter of Marvin Smith and Prudence Venable Smith, and had 11 brothers and sisters. She was the wife of the late Winthrop Phelps who was a grading contractor over a wide area of Georgia and former Chairman of the Greene County Board of Commissioners. She worked very closely with her husband assisting with office work in his business ventures. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Greensboro Woman''s Club and the First Baptist Church of Greensboro.
She is survived by two children, daughter, Geraldine P. Youngblood of Macon, Georgia (wife of the late Bobby J. Youngblood), and son, Perry Darrel Phelps and wife Bobbie of Greensboro, Georgia, a sister, Mae Torbert of Greensboro, Georgia, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was always a steady source of support and reliance for any member of her family and could always be depended upon under any circumstances.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, March 18, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Greensboro with Rev. Gary Nicholas and Rev. Jimmy A. Long officiating. Burial will follow at Greenview Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are David Torbert, Gerald Torbert, Bill Long, Joe Watwood, Michael Smith and Wilson Phelps. The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W. Broad St., Greensboro, GA, (706) 453-2626, is in charge of arrangements.
