Loyd Williams Obituary

Loyd Johnson Williams, age 94, of Greensboro, Georgia, died Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital. Born in Franklin County on June 16, 1911, he was the son of the late Henry Martin Williams and Cora Addison Williams. After graduating from Young Harris College in 1934, he continued his education at the University of Georgia receiving a BSA and later his Masters Degree in education. For thirty-seven years he taught Vocational Agriculture before retiring in July of 1973. He taught in Gwinnett County for twenty-three years and at the Greene County High School for fourteen years. Since 1959 Mr. Loyd was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro where he had served as chairman of the Board of Deacons, and had taught Sunday School for many years.

In 1966 he was recognized as the outstanding educator in livestock in Georgia. During his years of teaching his FFA chapter won numerous state and national awards. He was Special Assistant Supervisor of Agriculture Education for one year, working out of the Athens office. He also was past president of the Georgia Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association. In 2002 he was inducted as a member of the Georgia Vocational Agriculture Teachers Hall of Fame. He cherished most his opportunities over many years to have had the pleasure of guiding and molding the character of hundreds of young Future Farmers under his supervision.

He was past president of the Greene County Chamber of Commerce as well as the Greensboro Lions Club. He had also worked for the Rome, GA Chamber of Commerce as the director of the Rome Farm Market, Inc. He and his wife, Lois, were part owners of the Nathanael Greene Restaurant and Thrift Court Motel in Greensboro for many years. During retirement they had the pleasure of traveling extensively in the United States and several foreign countries.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Jones Williams of Greensboro, GA; two sons, James David Williams, M.D. of Dunwoody, GA and Thomas Johnson Williams of Seattle, WA; a sister, Azalee Murry of Athens, GA; five grandchildren, Cathy Williams of La Paz, Bolivia, Jim Williams of Homer, AK, Audrey Hancock of Cuetzalen, Mexico; Amy Hufham of Montgomery, AL and Beth Backus, Johnson City, TN; eleven great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 13, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Greensboro with Cliff Graham and Rev. Michael Hardy officiating. Interment will be at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Grayson, GA at 3:00 p.m. Serving as pallbearers are Charlton Veazey, John Young, Sonny Turner, Chris Houston, Quenton Hadden and Wyatt Martin.
