Lois Echols Rutherford

Lois Echols Rutherford, 89, of Union Point, GA, died Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital. She was born June 6, 1917 in Philomath in Oglethorpe County to the late Benjamin Tolbert Echols and Frances Elizabeth Walker Echols. She attended school in Philomath and started working when she was sixteen. On June 22, 1935 she married James Thomas "Tom" Rutherford. For fifty-six years she worked at Union Manufacturing in Union Point which later became Chipman Union where she worked in the Sock Shop and retired in 1989. After Pop Tom died in 2002 she continued to live at her home in Union Point and had just recently moved to Willow Run Retirement Home. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Union Point where she taught Sunday school in the Junior Department, was a member of WMU and served as a leader in GA''s. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Union Point Garden Club and a founding board member of the Union Point Community Center. Mama Lois was a beloved grandmother who loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James "Tom" Rutherford on January 5, 2002, an infant son on April 3, 1945; an infant daughter on January 10, 1938; and siblings, Ben Thomas Echols and Wynelle Broome. She is survived by a daughter, Gail Rutherford Lindsey and husband Gene of Union Point, GA; two sisters, Marjorie Tyler of Washington, GA and Gertrude Tyler of Washington, GA; two brothers, David Austin Echols and wife Donnie of Philomath, GA and Elliott Echols of White Sulfur Springs, WV; two granddaughters, Kathi Smoker and husband Brian of North Augusta, SC and Donna Edwards and husband Benjie of Washington, GA; a grandson, Dee Lindsey and wife Susan of Union Point, GA; eight great grandchildren, Trae Adams and wife Elenn, Kassi Adams, Brice Smoker, Barret Smoker, Britt Edwards, B J Edwards, Brooke Lindsey and Elliott Lindsey; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, March 30, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Union Point with Rev. Leonard Ezell officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Elliott Lindsey, B J Edwards, Trae Adams, Ricky Newsom, Paul Jackson and Tommy Swann. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
