Lawton Walker “Joe” Torbert, age 83, of Greensboro, Georgia, died Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital. Born in Greene County on April 26, 1922 he was one of nine children of the late Grover Cleveland Torbert, Sr. and Lilla Callahan Torbert. Having lived his entire life in Greene County, Joe attended school at Shiloh, Penfield, Siloam and graduated from Greensboro High School. He married Fredena Martin on August 14, 1947. Over the years he worked at Jim Boswell’s Station, Caldwell Laundry, owned and operated Torbert’s Easy Stop and later worked for Dowdy’s Grocery. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro and Hamp’s Sunday School Class. He was a past member of the Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife of fifty eight years, Fredena Martin Torbert of Greensboro, GA; two daughters, Terri T. Eskew and husband Tom of Gainesville, GA and Marcia T. Marchman and husband Andy of Acworth, GA; a son, Greg Torbert and wife Elaine of Bermuda; and two grandchildren, Britt Marchman and wife Kate of Tamarac, FL and Kyle Marchman of Acworth, GA. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Edward Torbert, Margaret T. Boswell, Grover Torbert Jr., Mary T. George, Alden “Doc” Torbert, Marian T. Moody, Louise T. Wray and Robert Jackson “Bobby” Torbert.
Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Greenview Cemetery with Rev. Michael Hardy and Rev. Dr. Norman Waldrip officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Kenny George, Danny Wray, Glenn Torbert, Gerald Torbert, David Torbert and Jack Baynes. Honorary pallbearers are the members of Hamp’s Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday night at the funeral home. Any memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 203 S.
