Lawrence Irby Gorman

Lawrence Irby Gorman, age 90, of Greensboro, GA, passed away Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville, GA. Irby was born in Atlanta, GA on January 22, 1926 to the late Elizabeth King Gorman and Clifford Calhoun Gorman who were both from Atlanta. In 1944 he graduated from Chamblee High School and later attended DeKalb Community College. Irby married the former Elizabeth Gardner on August 20, 1946. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Navy for twenty years and retired as Chief Petty Officer. After his military career Irby worked for Delta Air Lines as a mechanic and tool analyst for twenty-three years. In 1988, the year he retired, they moved to Lake Oconee in Greensboro, GA from Atlanta, GA. He was a member of Walker United Methodist Church of Greensboro. He was an avid outdoorsman who derived much pleasure in fishing and hunting and was also a private pilot.

In addition to his wife of seventy years, Elizabeth Gorman of Greensboro, GA, he is survived by three daughters, Sharon Gorman McCall and husband Hubert of Atlanta, GA, Debbie Wells and stepson Jason Wells of Ocracoke, NC and Peggy Gorman of Greensboro, GA; his wonderful caregiver and dear friend, Octavia Alexander; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by four brothers Cliff, JP, Melvin, and Charlie Floyd, and three sisters, Bertha Peek, Faye Bryan, and Agnes Mosteller.

A Funeral Service will be held at Walker United Methodist Church, 2730 Walker Church Road, Greensboro, GA 30642 on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. John W. Pike officiating. Graveside services will be held at Arlington Memorial Park, 201 Mt. Vernon Parkway, Sandy Springs, GA 30328 on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at 3:00 p.m.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Walker United Methodist Church, 2730 Walker Church Road, Greensboro, GA 30642.
