Kermit Eugene Combs

Kermit Eugene Combs of Greensboro, Georgia, died Thursday, August 3, 2017 in his home at Savannah Court of Lake Oconee at the age of 83. Mr. Combs was born in Cumberland, MD on January 30, 1934 to the late Wilbur F. and Dorothy Earnest Combs. In 1952 he graduated from Fort Hill High School. He received his Associate Degree and Bachelors Degree from Fairmont College where he was a member of the Tau Beta Iota Fraternity. He attended Virginia State during the summers from 1964-1968 where he earned his Masters Degree. He began his teaching career in 1957, teaching in the states of Maryland and Ohio. He retired in 1994 after twenty eight years as a science teacher at Mount Clemens High School. He continued to substitute teach for a few more years in Greene County, Georgia. On September 20, 1980, he married the former Rose Marie Wright and this September they would have celebrated their thirty-seventh wedding anniversary. After living in New Baltimore, MI, they moved to their home on Lake Oconee in June of 1994. Kermit was an active and faithful member of Walker United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher, taught in Vacation Bible School and served on numerous committees. He was also a member of the Old Salem Volunteer Fire Department.  Kermit enjoyed playing the harmonica, fishing and singing. He particularly loved singing in the church choir and was a co-founder of The Delmen of Del Webb. He enjoyed participating and coaching football, basketball, track and swimming.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur F. and Dorothy Mae Earnest Combs; his first wife, Margie Luella Combs; a son, Kermit Allan Combs; and sisters, Patricia Rounsevelle and   Janet Isner. In addition to his wife, Rose Marie Combs, of Greensboro, GA, he is survived by a daughter, Sherry Hanley of Chesterfield, MI; step-daughter, Laura (Pingel) Reed and husband Mark of Boyne Falls, MI; step-son, Michael J. Pingel I of Chesterfield, MI; five grandchildren, Amber Charrette and her husband Aaron, Brianna Hanley, Michael Pingel II, Nathan Pingel and Maxwell Reed; three great grandchildren, Baylee, Nora and Sophie Charrette; a number of other relatives, many friends; and his beloved dog, Onyx.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Walker United Methodist Church, 2730 Walker Church Road, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Rev. John Pike officiating. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Chupp, Fran D’Antonio, John Eadie, Bob Grashuis, Ron Silvey and Gary Walker. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until time for the service at Walker United Methodist Church.
