Kenneth David "Ken" Stephens

Kenneth David “Ken” Stephens, age 65, of Union Point, GA and native of Social Circle, GA, died Saturday, April 17, 2004 at Athens Regional Medical Center. He was born April 13, 1939 in Walton County and was the son of the late Hoyt Craft Stephens and Ressie McGee Stephens. He was also preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Jeffrey Stephens and his wife’s parents, Clyde and Pauline Lawson of Toccoa, GA. He graduated from Social Circle High School in the Class of “57. On July 1, 1957, he began his employment with Georgia Power Company, working in various locations in the Athens Division including Athens, Toccoa, Gainesville, Conyers, Winder, Duluth, Covington, Greensboro and Madison. He retired on June 1, 1994 from Georgia Power Company after completing 37 years of service. In 1977 he and his family moved to Greene County where he was Local Manager for the Greensboro Office and made his home in Union Point for 26 years. He served in the Army National Guard of Georgia for 7 years, receiving an honorable discharge in 1963. He was also active in various church, civic and community organizations in the various locations where he worked. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union Point, an active member of Georgia Power Ambassadors and an avid hunter and outdoorsman. In November of last year he was diagnosed with cancer which he fought with courage and dignity.   Ken is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Linda Lawson Stephens of Union Point, GA and his two sons, Sandy Stephens and wife Ronda of Toccoa, GA and Kelly Stephens of Atlanta, GA; a sister, Sharon Barts and husband Bobby of Social Circle, GA. He also leaves a host of other relatives and friends.   Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Union Point with Rev. Leonard Ezell and Rev Robert Rayner officiating. Interment Services will be Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at Stephens Memorial Gardens in Toccoa , GA at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Don Scott officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Herb Turner, Bill English, Terry Lawson, Ken Rowland, Gerald Peppers, Joe Walton, Jimmy Walker and Lanier Rhodes. Honorary pallbearers will be Georgia Power Ambassadors and employees of Georgia Power Company. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Relay for Life Fund c/o First Baptist Church, 206 Thornton Street, Union Point, GA 30669. The family will receive friends Monday night from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at McCommons Funeral Home in Greensboro, GA and Tuesday night from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Whitlock Mortuary in Toccoa, GA.
