Katherine Ophelia Ward Hollis

Katherine Ophelia Ward Hollis, of Sparta, Georgia died Monday, November 28, 2016 at her residence. She was 97.  Katherine was born in Greene County on October 29, 1919, a daughter of the late Maudie Arnold Ward and James Wilburn Ward. She graduated from Greensboro High School. She met her husband Samuel Howard Hollis, Jr. while he was working at the bank in Siloam, GA. In 1944 the bank was moved from Siloam to Sparta where they then made their home. She was an active member of the Sparta Presbyterian Church and the Women of the Sparta Presbyterian Church.  For many years she was a member of the Sparta Historical Society. She was a wonderful wife to her husband, mother to her children, grandmother, and great grandmother.  She was a very talented portrait painter and an antique connoisseur.

Survivors include three daughters, Katherine H. Beall of Tybee Island, GA, Sarah H. Greene of Athens, GA and Caroline H. Baker and husband Jim of Milledgeville, GA; a son, Sam Hollis III and wife Verne of Sparta, GA; grandchildren, Eugene Beall and wife Camilee, Harris Beall, Katherine Beall Dean and husband Zack, Rebecca Greene Sartor and husband Robert, Elizabeth Greene Peterson and husband Hugh, James Baker, Jr, John Baker and wife Shannon, David Baker, Samuel Hollis IV, Hilary Koncul and husband Chris, and Tom Hollis; great grandchildren, Matthew Baker, Jane Baker, William Sartor, Caroline Sartor, Sarah Jane Peterson, Katherine Peterson, Benjamin Hollis Koncul and Katherine Hollis Dean; step great grandchildren, Anniston Howell, Henry Howell, Valan Kennedy, and Taylor Kennedy; and many nieces and nephews.  She was cared for lovingly by Donnie Andrews, Geraldine Barnes, Mary Bell, Susie Roach and Ruthie Wilcox. Katherine was loved by many and had a wide circle of devoted friends.  In addition to her husband, Sam Hollis, she was preceded in death by her siblings, James Spurgeon Ward, Travis L. Ward, Tyrus Ward, William Arnold Ward, Dorothy Stewart and Jamie Davies; and son-in-law, Jeff Sanchez.

Cryptside Services will be held Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Sparta City Cemetery, Hamilton Street, Sparta, GA 31087 with Rev. Reggie Haslett officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Eugene Beall, Harris Beall, James Baker, Jr, John Baker, David Baker,Sam Hollis IV, Tom Hollis, Hugh Peterson, Robert Sartor, Chris Koncul, and Zack Dean. The family requests that memorials be made to the Sparta Presbyterian Church, or John Hancock Academy, P. O. Drawer E, Sparta, GA 31087. Friends will be received at the family’s home, 11915 Highway 15, Sparta, GA 31087, from 10:00 a.m. until time for the service.
