Frances Josephine West Allen of Greensboro, GA, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday, died Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Greene Point Health and Rehabilitation, located in Union Point, GA. A lifelong Greene County resident, she was born on September 29, 1912 to the late Joseph Reuben West and Mary Bell Satterfield West. Mrs. Allen attended schools in Greensboro. She worked as a spinner for Mary Leila Cotton Mill, which later became Wellington Puritan Mills, until it closed. She also worked a number of years at Chipman-Union Manufacturing and Hometown Manufacturing. Mrs. Allen was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro and a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class. She was a loving mother and grandmother whose greatest joys in life were serving her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, caring for her family and, for more than 50 years, relishing her roles as grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. "Granny Allen" will always hold a special place in the hearts of the many children she loved and cared for through the years.
Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her husband Lee Lucious Allen, Sr.; daughters, Mary Jim Vandiver and Bobbie Lee Phelps; son-in-law Hoyt "June" Vandiver, Jr.; grandsons Michael Short, Donny Vandiver and Scott Phelps; siblings, Ruby Bell Knight, Mary Elizabeth West, Minnie Lucille Humphrey, Willy Tilman West and J. R. West. She is survived by a son, Lee "Dink" Allen, Jr. of Greensboro, GA; son-in-law, Darrel Phelps of Greensboro, GA; five grandchildren, David Allen, Bobby Allen, Mary Joyce "Sister" Vandiver Kennedy, Judy Vandiver Warnick and Rebecca "Becky" Phelps Long; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; plus a wealth of other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 203 S. Main Street, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Dr. Norman Waldrip officiating. Interment will follow in the Greensboro City Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Greensboro, GA 30642. Serving as pallbearers are Scott Baynes, Bill Byce, Chuck Finch, David Kopp, Ray Marchman, and Bobby Voyles. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Fidelis Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time for the service. The family requests that any memorials be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 203 S.
