Joseph Donnan Obituary

Joseph A. Donnan United States Army Colonel (Ret.), age 72, of Greensboro, Georgia passed away June 2, 2002 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. Mr. Donnan was born November 19, 1929 in Macon, Georgia to the late Abner Brannon Donnan and Mary Frances Mann Donnan. He graduated from Lanier High School of Macon, Georgia in 1947 and graduated in the first class of ROTC officers from Mercer University of Macon, Georgia in 1951. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the US Army Anti-Aircraft Artillery Division for 2 years and was in the Quarter Master Corps for 27 years. In 1964 he received an MBA from American University of Washington D.C. and graduated from Command and General Staff College of Ft. Leavenworth, KS in 1965. After serving in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967 he was on assignment from 1968 to 1969 with the office of the Secretary of Defense. From 1975 to 1976 he was Depot Commander at Burtonwood Army Depot of Burtonwood, England. He received the Legion of Merit Medal four times during his career and retired from the Army in 1980 after 29 years of service. From 1981 to 1987 he was at the Institute of Modern Procedures and from 1988 to 1991 with National Capitol Systems, Inc. In July of 1991 he moved to Lake Oconee and was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Disabled Veterans Association, and the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro.

He is survived by his wife Asenath Smith Donnan of Greensboro, Georgia; one son, Mike Donnan and wife Toni of Paris, Texas; one stepson Charles B. Crawley and wife Elizabeth of Lawrenceville, Georgia; and five grandchildren, Chris Donnan and Ben Donnan both of Paris, Texas, Jillian Crawley, Lauren Crawley, and Erin Crawley, all of Ripley, West Virginia.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, June 6, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro with Rev. Richard Chewning officiating. Graveside Services will follow with full Military Honors at 3:00 p.m. at Macon Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers are Ron Williams, Bill Whorley, Phillip Harkins, Retired US Marine Corp Colonel Bud Sanders, Ron Bykowski, and Delacy Luke. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers are Jack Robertson, Retired US Army Colonel Lamar Sheldon, and Retired US Marine Corp Lt. Colonel Robert W. Shaw. The family requests that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 202 W. Broad Street, Greensboro, Georgia 30642. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00p.m. Wednesday night at the Funeral Home. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W. Broad St., Greensboro, GA, (706) 453-2626, is in charge of arrangements.
