Johnnie Moon, Jr Obituary

Johnnie Henry Moon, Jr., affectionately known as "Preacher" and "Little Johnnie", 95, of the Veazey Community in Greene County, died Sunday, February 15, 2004. Mr. Johnnie was born in Greene County on September 24, 1908 to the late John Henry Moon, Sr. and Pearl Merritt Moon. After losing his mother when he was eight, his father married a good Christian woman who sat Johnnie on her lap and said "I''m going to make a preacher out of you" and that''s why people call him "Preacher" today. He was the loving husband of Allene Channell Moon for 73 years. They married on April 6, 1930. He attended Veazey School and was an active and diligent lifelong member of Walker United Methodist Church where he was a steward and member of Moon''s Sunday School Class. Mr. Johnnie especially loved selling tickets for their church bar-b-ques and usually sold the most. During his working career, he started as the operator of the Rock Station in Greensboro and then operated a station next to Caldwell Laundry. Later, he worked for J. B. Dolvin at Greene County Motor Company and in January of 1956 went into business with his son, Richard, at Richard''s Gulf. In 1964 he opened Johnnie Moon''s Grocery and Service Station in Veazey which he owned and operated until 1989. "Little Johnnie", as many people called him, was a big man in a little body. He loved all people and wanted to be of help anywhere he could.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Carolyn M. Foster and husband Buddy of the Veazey Community, Charlene Morgan and husband Ellis of White Plains, GA and Rita M. Overton and husband Skip of the Veazey Community; two sons, Richard Moon of Greensboro and Roger Moon and wife Linda of the Veazey Community; fifteen grandchildren, Ray Foster, Paul Foster, Joe Foster, Elaine Standard, Doris Toland, Charles Morgan, Susan Lindsey, Ellen Davis, Brian Leach, Carrie Cantrell, Thomas Moon, Lester Moon, Janice Lawrence, Eugene Moon and Marie Vandiver; twenty-four great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Moon and George Moon; two sisters, Julia Mae Moon and Daisy Foster; a grandson, John Allen Moon; and a great grandson, Kyle Foster.
