John Archie Branon, 84, of Buckhead, GA, died May 31, 2004 at Greene Point Health Care Center in Union Point. He was born in Carroll County, Georgia on August 30, 1919 to the late Henry Branon and Mae Hagen Branon. He moved to Morgan County in 1921 and attended Madison Schools. During World War II, he served in the United States Army in Iwo Jima. From 1958 until 1983 he owned and operated Branon''s Garage and Auto Parts in Buckhead where he worked on cars, trucks and tractors. He served as City Councilman for Buckhead and was Buckhead''s first Fire Chief, a position he kept for many years. He was a member of Buckhead Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Harwood Branon. He is survived by two daughters, Carol Hilsman of Eatonton, GA and Bobbie Jones and husband Ricky of Greensboro, GA; a son, John A "Buddy" Branon Jr. and wife Karen of Buckhead, GA; a brother, Joe Branon of Carrollton, GA; nine grandchildren, Steve Hilsman, Stacy Farmer, John Hilsman, Jennifer Baade, Michelle Stovall, Nicole Armour, John A, "Trey" Branon III, Heather Darden and Andrew Robert "Bay" Jones; twelve great grandchildren, Hailie Hilsman, Steven Hilsman Jr., McKenzie Whitaker, John Wells Hilsman, Ariel Watkins, Adam Watkins, Hays Farmer, Jordan Hilsman, Zachery Hilsman, Grace Stovall, Hannah Stovall and Robert W. "Gant" Darden IV; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Buckhead Baptist Church with Rev. Howard Alford and Rev. MaCrae Olinger officiating. Burial will follow at Buckhead City Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers are Steve Hilsman, John Hilsman, Andrew Robert "Bay" Jones, John A. "Trey" Branon III, Robert "Trip" Darden III, Brian Baade and James "Bo" Farmer III. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Grayson White, Robert Buamgarner, Claude Alford and Bill Bonner Jr. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday night at the funeral home.
