Jennie Blair Thurmond Carlton
A resident of Union Point for over 60 years, she was born in Danburg, Ga on January 20, 1923 to Belle Knox and James Gordon Thurmond. Being the youngest of their five children by many years, she was always quite adored by her family.
She attended school in Danburg and college at Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Ga. She married William Henry Carlton, Jr. from Union Point who preceded her in death in 1984. Both were active in sports and met at a high school basketball game. She helped her husband at J.E. Carlton and Co. in Union Point, a business established by her husband’s grandfather.
She was a long standing member of First United Methodist Church teaching Sunday School, leading the children’s sermons and serving on numerous committees. For many years she enjoyed golfing and playing bridge with her friends. She was an excellent cook, enjoyed sewing, arranging flowers and was a master of needlepoint. Jennie was also a member of The Greene County Country Club, Union Point Garden Club and a charter member of the Wayside Home Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
She embraced life with a warm spirit and delightful humor which was reflected in her love, beauty and personality. She loved and was loved by so many and her family and friends will miss her dear presence in their lives.
Her children are a daughter, Carmin Knox Carlton Walstad (Med) and a son, William Henry Carlton III. Her grandchildren are Win Walstad (Stephanie), Blair Walstad Burson (Turner) Carlton Knox Walstad (Shannon), Hank Carlton (Alexandria) and Christy Carlton Morris along with eight great granddaughters and two great grandsons. She was preceded in death by her siblings, John Knox Thurmond, Polly Standard, Embelle Clements and Jim Thurmond.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 2, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 714 Park Avenue, Union Point, GA 30669 with Rev. Bert Mathews officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Callaway Funeral Home. Pallbearers are Hank Carlton, Win Walstad, Carlton Walstad, Turner Burson, Bobby Cleveland, Brett Cleveland and Blair Cleveland. The family would like to thank the six wonderful caregivers who were so dedicated to her in the recent months.
