Janie Mae Matthews Cannon

Janie Mae Matthews Cannon, age 91, of Geensboro, died Monday, September 21, 2009 at Saint Joseph''s East Georgia in Greensboro. A lifelong resident of Greene County, she was born September 13, 1918 the daughter of the late Jarrell Matthews and Varor Elizabeth McCollough Matthews. She received her education from Siloam School and Cedar Grove School. In 1938 she married George Robert Cannon and in 1954 started working for Lena Hy Garment Company as a seamstress and retired in 1980. Crafts, sewing, needle point and crocheting were her favorite pastimes. Janie Mae was a member of West End Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Robert Cannon in 1986; a daughter, Allean C. Jones in 1963; and siblings, Mattie Lou Sinclair, Evelyn Hugley, Eva Railey, James Matthews and Gene Matthews. Survivors include three daughters, Geraldine Batchelor of Greshamville, Patricia Deason and husband James of Greensboro and Linda Ogle and husband Donald of Greensboro; two sons, Robert Larry Cannon and wife Toni of Oxford, GA and Robby Jones of Greensboro; a sister, Barbara Allen of Greenwood, SC; seven grandchildren, Harold Batchelor, Angela Driggers, Michael Cannon, Julie Eppinger, Pamela Corry, Amanda Wiggins and Vickie Green; nine great grandchildren, J. W. Key, Melissa Key, John Grubbs, Brayden Batchelor, Bayli Cannon, Ansli Cannon, Adam Corry, David Corry and Joan McKay Green; great great grandchild, Duston Key; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Pritchett and Rev. Wayne Usry officiating. Interment will follow at the Church Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Harold Batchelor, Mike Cannon, J. W. Key, Adam Corry, David Corry and Doug Cannon. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday night at McCommons Funeral Home in Greensboro.
