James Tierney Obituary

James F. Tierney of 1071 Anchor Bay Drive, The Landing at Reynolds Plantation, Greensboro, GA, died at home Tuesday morning, December 21. He was 76.

Besides his wife Anne, he is survived by a son Christopher and daughter-in-law Taddy of Atlanta, GA, two sisters Florence Baukat of Deerfield Beach, SC and Caroline Bruno of Palm Beach Gardens, FL and several nephews and nieces.

Born in South Hadley, MA, he attended the South Hadley schools, the Georgia Institute of Technology and Western New England College. He was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity.

Most of his career was spent at United Technologies Corporation where he was the Financial Manager for the Hamilton Standard division in Windsor Locks, Connecticut handling military and government space programs. After 31 years he left Hamilton and joined the Kollmorgen Corporation in Northampton, Massachusetts for another 10 years. While at Kollmorgen he was the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer for the Electro-Optical Division, which manufactures precision optics for militaries around the world. His expertise was in finance and negotiating government contracts.

He was a consummate volunteer and served with several fire departments in his home communities as an Emergency Medical Technician and as a volunteer firefighter. As chairman of a school building project in Connecticut, he was the overseer of the construction of a new high school and renovations to a middle school. In Vermont, he served as the volunteer director of the medical clinic at Stratton Mountain where he was also a member of the ski patrol. He was the longest serving president of the Stratton Mountain Country Club. In addition to golf and skiing, he was an avid hunter and fisherman.

A memorial Time of Remembrance will be held in the new year.
