James Hamilton “Hamp” McWhorter
James Hamilton “Hamp” McWhorter, age 85, of Greensboro, Georgia, passed away Friday, November 7, 2014, at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Greensboro. Born in Stephens, GA on February 16, 1929, he was the son of the late Johnnie Key McWhorter and Ruth Haynes McWhorter. After living and going to school in Stephens as a child, Hamp graduated from Young Harris. His entire working career was with the Georgia Department of Transportation as an Engineer retiring in August of 1983 after thirty-four years of service. During the Korean War, he served his country in the United States Army from 1950 until 1956 and was honorably discharged as a Corporal. On November 23, 1968, he married Betty Ann Carr Dickens of Sparta, GA. He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro and a member of the San Marino Lodge #34. Always an avid sports fan, Hamp never thought he should miss a Georgia Bulldogs football game. He always enjoyed playing golf at the Greene County Country Club and hunting rabbits.
Survivors include his wife of forty-six years, Betty McWhorter of Greensboro, GA; two daughters, Bonnie Duvall (Zippy) of the Greshamville Community and Hannah Baynes (Scott) of Greensboro, GA; grandchildren, Vince Duvall (Erin), Cora Duvall Terry (Jared), Zeb Duvall, Zellie Duvall, Mollie Baynes Knowles (Jordan), and Em Baynes; great grandchildren, Ava Duvall, Tripp Duvall and Jocee Terry; and a sister Lily McFarland (Bobby) of Stephens, GA. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte Maureen Culberson McWhorter in April of 1965. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, J.K. McWhorter and Luan Powell.
Funeral Services will be held, Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church North Campus, 202 W. Broad Street, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Rev. Ed Nelson and Rev. Mike Pritchett officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenview Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Greensboro, GA 30642. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until time for the service at the church. Serving as pallbearers are Zippy Duvall, Vince Duvall, Zeb Duvall, Jared Terry, Scott Baynes, Jordan Knowles, Gregory Carr and Stephen Cox; Honorary pallbearers will be members of the San Marino Lodge #34, Chris Bailey, Roscoe Haynes, Murell Byce and Wayne Sisson.
