James Preston “Jimmy” Hight, age 61, of Greensboro, GA died Friday, February 16, 2007 at Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital. He was born in Baldwin County on February 4, 1946. Descending from one of Georgia’s first families who arrived with Oglethorpe, founding the colony of Georgia, James Preston Hight Jr. was the son of the late James Preston Hight, Sr. and Edith Pierce Alfriend Hight of Sparta, Georgia. He was a graduate of Sparta High School and the University of Georgia with a BS in English. He was a lifelong teacher and educator in the state of Georgia. He taught at Newton County High School in Covington, Nathanael Greene Academy in Siloam and Thomas Jefferson Academy in Louisville. He served in the Georgia National Guard. He was the organist for the First Presbyterian Churches in Greensboro and Sparta. Jimmy was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Greensboro.
He is survived by his adopted family, James and Bonnie Hanks of Athens, GA, Edwin and Katie Hanks of Jefferson, GA, Jane Ellen and Julie Hanks of Athens, GA, Joel McRay of Union Point, GA, Cheryl and Keith Eley of Siloam, GA, Bud Kennedy of Union Point, GA and Judy Hodnett of White Plains, GA; his cousins, Camille Bailey of Union Point, GA, Paula Bailey of Union Point, GA, Neal Bailey of Florida, Walter Bailey of South Carolina, Jim Alfriend of Thomson, GA and Nell Butler of Atlanta, GA; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Graveside Services will be held on Sunday, February 18, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. at Sparta City Cemetery with The Rev. D. Geoffrey Taylor officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Ford G’Segner, Steve McCommons, Phil Robinson, Fred Webster, Sam Hollis, Louis Rozier, Franklin Hitchcock, William Myers, Edwin Hanks, John Copelan, Keith Eley, Algie Jones, Chuck Wimberly, Travis Rivers and Albert Brown. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday night at the funeral home.
