Jack Vernon Merritt

Jack Vernon Merritt, of the Liberty Community died on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at his residence with his loved ones by his side. He was 93.  A lifelong resident of Greene County Jack was born in Greensboro, GA on February 26, 1926 the son of the late Reid Ceils Merritt and Bessie Phillips Merritt. He attended school at Meadowcrest and Veazey and on December 20, 1946 married Montine Hardigree of Union Point.  Jack proudly served his country in the United States Army.  He was a successful businessman in both logging and farming as owner and operator of Merritt Farms.  As long as health permitted he was a faithful member of Liberty United Methodist Church. Jack loved his family and always enjoyed family reunions with his children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters and their families.  He also enjoyed attending the Liberty Tractor Pull in White Plains.

In addition to his wife of sixty-nine years, Montine Merritt, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Doyle Merritt, Ruby Nell Powell and Louise Atkinson.  He is survived by three daughters, Joyce Strickland (David), Jackie Kay (Guy) and Rhonda Eaton (Allen); two sons, Jeffery Merritt (Jane) and Darrell Merritt (Melinda); two sisters, Lois Leach (Billy) and Sybil Godbee (Marion); brother, Ceils Merritt (Carol); eight grandchildren: Michael Strickland (Rynee), Kevin Strickland (Stacey), Dana Hayes (Billy Joe), Hank Carlton (Alex), Ryan Merritt (Sybil), Pam Merritt, Morgan Hardigree (Dennis) and Melissa Davis; sixteen great grandchildren: Collin Strickland, Jackson Strickland, Conner Strickland, Hayden Strickland, Rebecca Bashore, Taylor Underwood, Kendall Carlton, Beau Carlton, Kate Merritt, John Ryan Merritt, Matthew Davis, Makayla Davis, Madalyn Davis, Charlotte Hardigree, Makinley Hardigree and Eleanor Hardigree; two great, great grandchildren: Waylon Strickland and Dalton Bashore; many other relatives and friends.  

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Liberty United Methodist Church, 3091 Liberty Church Road, White Plains, GA 30678 with Rev. Tom Compton and Rev. Wes Privett officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers are grandsons and great grandsons: Michael Strickland, Kevin Strickland, Ryan Merritt, Hank Carlton, Collin Strickland and Dennis Hardigree.  Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Cronan, Jack Phares, Cecil Powell and Roy Embry.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until time for the service at Liberty United Methodist Church.  The family request that any memorials be made to the Liberty United Methodist Church, c/o Dede Smith, 1691 Bramlett Road, Greensboro, GA 30642.  The family would like to thank his wonderful caregivers, Donna Higdon, Louise Kidd and Affinis Hospice.   McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
