Jack Andrew Shirey

Jack Andrew Shirey, age 93, of Greensboro, GA, died Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Savannah Court of Lake Oconee in Greensboro, GA.  He was born in Pittsburgh, PA on August 28, 1920 the son of the late William Christopher Shirey and Mary Stoner Shirey.  Jack received an accounting credential from a Chicago business school in the late 1940’s.  On September 12, 1940 he married Jean Evelyn Underwood in Gary, Indiana and prior to her death in 2009, they had been married sixty-nine years.  He proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Navy from August of 1944 and was honorably discharged in March of 1946. He worked as an accountant in Northern Indiana until 1958 when he moved the family to Ft. Collins, Colorado.  There, he worked for Forney Industries for a number of years doing personnel work and eventually finished his career working in business management for Mitchell and Company in Ft. Collins.  He retired in 1983.  Jack was a member of the First United Methodist Church South Campus of Greensboro.  

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Underwood Shirey; son, Dr. James Shirey; and siblings, Walter Shirey, Cloyd Shirey Romig and Blanche Shirey Dicker. He is survived by two sons, Dr. Terry Shirey and wife Carol of Wayland, MA and Dr. William Shirey and wife Denise of Greensboro, GA; daughter-in-law, Dr. Karen Shirey of Ft. Collins, CO; grandchildren, Jennifer Shirey Moss of Atlanta, GA, Jack Shirey of Alameda, CA, Andrew Shirey of San Francisco, CA and Katherine Shirey Swanson of Boston, MA.

A private family service will be held at a later date.  The family requests that any memorials be made to Wounded Warriors Project, 3343 Peachtree Road, NE #M20, Atlanta, GA 30326.  McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
