Herbert Chapman, age 91, of Greensboro, Georgia, died Friday, May 16, 2008 at Greene Point Health Care Center in Union Point. Born in Taliaferro County on February 6, 1917 he was the son of the late Simon Delos Chapman and Camilla Jones Chapman. He attended Alexander Stephens Institute in Crawfordville. During World War II he served his country in the United States Army. While serving in the Pacific Theater in the Philippines and New Guinea, he was wounded in action in November of 1944 and received the Purple Heart. He was a postal clerk for the Greensboro Post Office retiring in 1987. He was a faithful member at the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Moore Chapman, on January 23, 1977; and siblings, William Roger Chapman, Ernest Chapman, Everett Chapman and Fannie McDougle. He is survived by a daughter, Jane Chapman Merritt and husband Jeffery of the Liberty Community; a brother, Sterling J. Chapman of Thomson, GA; granddaughter, Pam Merritt of the Liberty Community; grandson, Ryan Merritt and wife Sybil of the Liberty Community; niece and nephew, Elizabeth Tuck of Columbia, SC, Jimmy Chapman of Thomson, GA and a number of great nieces, great nephews and friends.
Graveside Services will be held on Monday, May 19, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. at Greenview Cemetery with Rev. Richard Chewning officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sunday night at the funeral home. The family requests that any memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, P. O.
