Harold Edward “Bubba” Rivers of Greensboro, GA, died Thursday, February 6, 2014 at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Greensboro. He was 81 years old. Born in Augusta, Georgia on June 29, 1932, Harold was the son of the late Heyward Rivers, Sr. and Theresa Adele Hensley Rivers. Prior to graduating from The Academy of Richmond County in 1950, Harold enlisted in the Navy Reserves from 1949-1952 until he went into active duty in the United States Air Force and served his country for four years from 1952-1956. After being honorably discharged from military service, Harold attended Augusta College. During this time, Harold saw an open field where he envisioned a golf course. With Harold's entrepreneurial and salesmenship spirit, Green Meadows Golf Course in Augusta was created. Leaving Augusta in 1960, Harold and his family moved to Akron, Ohio where he was employed by Alcon Manufacturing Co. Harold owned and operated his own business, Herco Inc., from 1968 until his retirement in 1995 in Newcomerstown, Ohio. HERCO, Inc. is a company that makes tools for the woodworking industry.
Meeting the former Noreen Elizabeth Zickel while volunteering with Hospice of Tuscarawas County, Ohio, Harold and Noreen married on February 15, 1997. Harold had many talents such as woodworking, leather work, magic, painting, calligraphy, and stained glass. He also loved fishing, golfing, playing cards, gun collecting and was a marksman shooter and a pilot. He loved to travel to such places as Jerusalem, Egypt, and Africa. Harold was on missionary teams in Alaska, North Carolina, and Zambia, Africa. While living in Greensboro he attended Walker United Methodist Church, Lake Oconee Lutheran Church and Lake Point Church in Eatonton.
In addition to his wife, Noreen Rivers of Greensboro, GA, he leaves his beloved family, three daughters, Vicki Lynn Seich (Tom) of El Dorado Hills, CA, Teresa Diane Buzille (Charlie) of Charleston, SC, and Cindy Louise Basner (Seve) of Augusta, GA; a son, Randy Edward Rivers of Sacramento, CA; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Nell Gannaway and Nancy Warren (Jack); and a number of other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Heyward Rivers, Jr. and Martha Louise Jarrell.
Memorial Services will be held on Monday, February 10, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Walker United Methodist Church, 2730 Walker Church Road with Rev. John Pike, Rev. Scott Moore and Rev. Herman Laguins officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday after the service in the church fellowship hall.
