Gussie Gerald Channell, age 79, of Greensboro, GA died Friday, July 7, 2006 at Athens Regional Medical Center. Born on January 23, 1927 in the Wesley Chapel Community in Greene County, Gussie was the son of the late Henry Conway Channell and Fannie Belle Finch Channell. After graduation from Greensboro High School in 1945, he was drafted in the United States Army where he served his country for two years. In 1947 he came back to Greensboro and worked a year for Mr. Settles who owned Greensboro-Union Point Freight Line. In 1948 Gussie joined the United States Air Force where he spent the next eighteen years retiring in 1966. He and his wife Lillian, who he met while in the Air Force, returned to Greene County. He worked with his brother, Duck Channell in the dairy business until 1971 when he started working for the Greensboro Post Office as a substitute mail carrier for John Cawthon. He retired in March of 1992 after carrying the mail over half a million miles. He was a member of Wesley Chapel Wesleyan Church.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian Channell of Greensboro, GA; a son, Floyd Channell and wife Lisa of Greensboro, GA; a brother, James W. "Duck" Channell of Greensboro, GA; a granddaughter, AnnaMarie Channell of Greensboro, GA; a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Channell; a sister, Daisy C. Jones; and three brothers, Melvin Channell, Ernest Channell and Lennie Channell.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, July 9, 2006 at 6:00 p. m. at Wesley Chapel Wesleyan Church Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Usry officiating. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
