Grace Strickland Obituary

Grace Belle Morgan Strickland, age 96, of the Liberty Community, died on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at St. Mary''s Good Samaritan Hospital. Born in Winder, GA, on October 28, 1916 she was the eleventh of thirteen children born to the late Robert Edward and Mary Elizabeth Rives Morgan, all of whom predeceased her. She graduated from Hancock County Schools. On December 24, 1938, she married Lanis Strickland. She worked in the lunchroom of Greensboro/Greene County High School and was affectionately known as the "roll lady". She estimated that in the twenty-six years she worked in the lunchroom, she made over 2500 rolls four days a week or approximately 2,234,000 yeast rolls. After her husband''s death she learned to drive at the age of fifty-five and continued her employment in the lunchroom and as a store clerk for Greensboro Mercantile under the management of the Snelsons, Marchmans, and Marretts. She also worked on weekends as assistant dietician at Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital. After full retirement she made quilts which she sold and gave to her family as gifts and also enjoyed gardening. As a member of Liberty United Methodist Church she was active in all aspects teaching Sunday School and helping with Vacation Bible School.

In addition to her huband, Lanis Strickland, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Duffy; and her siblings, Arry Morgan (Gertrude), Gladys Stewart (Sammy), Ila Edwards ((Waldo), Ed Morgan (Lucille), Lee Morgan (Gussie), Jesse Morgan (Marie), Homer "Buck" Morgan, Jewell Stewart (Newell), Mary Harrison (Tom), Elmer "Dude" Morgan (Jurrell), Rubye Gentry (Henry) and Clifton Morgan (Sara). She is survived by two daughters, Linda Bone and husband Melvin of Greensboro, GA and Margie Smith of North Augusta, SC; a son, David Strickland and wife Joyce of the Liberty Community; son-in-law, Bob Duffy of Dacula, GA; eight grandchildren, Brian Coltrane, Jennifer Frakes, Michael Strickland, Kevin Strickland, Dana Hayes, Greg Johnson, Lanis Adams and Mary Adams; eleven great grandchildren; a special niece, Cheryl Gentry; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, March 15, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Liberty United Methodist Church, 3091 Liberty Church Road, White Plains, GA 30678 with Rev. Tom Compton and Rev. Ed Swehla officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are grandsons and great grandsons: Brian Coltrane, Michael Strickland, Kevin Strickland, Lanis Adams, Greg Johnson, Hayden Strickland and Collin Strickland. Great grandsons: Jackson Strickland, Conner Strickland, David Coltrane and Gavin Johnson will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at McCommons Funeral Home.
