Gerald Mitchell Thaxton, age 63, of Union Point, GA, died Sunday, February 17, 2008 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center of Augusta. Born in Wilkes County on March 19, 1944 he was the son of Mary Callaway Thaxton Pittman of Union Point, GA and the late Bennie Lee Thaxton. In 1962 he graduated from Union Point High School and then entered the United States Air Force. He served his country in Japan during the Vietnam Era. For a while he was in Insurance and then worked for Kirby in Mobile, Alabama for a total of thirty years. His last five years were spent in Pensacola, FL and he recently returned to Union Point to be closer to his family. He played Tournament Pool where he had won several trophies and loved fishing. Another favorite pastime was doing mechanic work and tinkering on his old cars. Gerald attended Olive Baptist Church in Pensacola, FL.

In addition to his mother, Mary Callaway Thaxton Pittman, of Union Point, GA, he is survived by a stepdaughter, Heather Tittle of Tennessee; a stepson, Clint Tittle of Tennessee; a sister, Janice Thaxton Pitts and husband Lewis of Conyers, GA; a brother, Douglas Thaxton of Woodville, GA; step grandchildren, Cody and Casey; a number of nieces; and a host of friends.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at McCommons Chapel with Rev. Leonard Ezell officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Union Point, GA. Serving as pallbearers are Gene Lindsey, Ricky Newsom, Keith Branyan, Richard Dingler, Paul Jackson, Melvin Johnson, James Callaway and Ricky Callaway.
