George Young Obituary

Herman George Young, age 79, of Greensboro, Georgia, died on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, GA.  Born in Queens, NY on September 25, 1934, he was the son of the late Herman George and Evelyn Ruth Glier Young.  He graduated from Brooklyn Tech, then received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Long Island University.  He later received his Master’s Degree from Columbia University.  George joined the Army in 1952, where he was stationed in El Paso, Texas, working on the Nike Missile Program.  After being honorably discharged, George was a minor league pitcher for the New York Giants.  For 34 years he worked for Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage, New York, where he proudly supported a myriad of Grumman products including Apollo Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) Program, F-14 Tomcat, EA-6B Prowler, A-6 Intruder, E2-C Hawkeye, Space Shuttle Wings, Gulfstream G1 and G2, EF-111A Raven, and X-29.  He rose through the technical ranks, eventually retiring as Deputy Director of Manufacturing Technology Operations in 1994.  After relocating to Reynolds Plantation, George worked at Reynolds Landing as a Golf Course Advisor and valued the many friendships he made there.  George was an avid bridge player, and enjoyed golfing, gardening, walking his dogs, and going to the beach.

George was predeceased by his first wife, Anne Young. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Nancy Lee Young; a daughter, Tauni Mokarry and husband Keith of Monroe, CT; two sons, Larry Young and his wife Anne of Massapequa, NY and Jeremy Young and his wife Susan of Massapequa, NY; step-daughter, Jennifer Kiehl of Woodstock, GA; sister, Marge Stahley and her husband Edward of Massapequa, NY; brother, Robert, Florida; eleven grandchildren, an extended number of relatives, and many friends.

The family will have a celebration of his life on Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at the Lake Oconee Community Church.  His wife requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations  be made to Oconee Regional Humane Society, 6350 Lake Oconee Parkway #102, Greensboro, GA 30642 (706) 454-1508.  McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
