George Lawrence “G.L.” Culver, Jr., age 82, of Union Point, GA, died Thursday, October 13, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospice in Bogart, GA. A native of Greene County, he was born in Union Point, GA on November 9, 1928 to the late George Lawrence Culver, Sr. and Marie Moody Culver. He graduated from Union Point High School and on June 22, 1949 married the former Jean Johnson of Warren County. G. L. was the owner of Culver Construction Company for over 20 years. He designed and built many homes and businesses in Greene and surrounding counties. Later he was the Chief Design Estimator at the University of Georgia from 1969 until he retired in 1990. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union Point, served on the Union Point Housing Authority and was a member of the Georgia Retired Educators Association. He enjoyed woodworking and photography, and at a younger age enjoyed fishing and playing golf.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Johnson Culver in October of 2006; and his sister, Martha Culver Stewart in November of 2008. He is survived by a daughter, Amy Culver Roland and husband Billy of Greensboro, GA; and a grandson, Brent Roland and wife Holly of Monroe, GA.
Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Greenlawn Cemetery, Rhodes Street, Union Point, Georgia 30669 with Rev. Harry Michael officiating. Serving as pallbearers are the deacons of First Baptist Church: Gene Lindsey, Henry Sisson, Elliott Lindsey, Dee Lindsey, Mark Higdon, Paul Jackson, Ron Lee and Ken Rowland. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday night at Callaway Funeral Home. The family requests that any memorials be made to St. Mary’s Hospice, P. O.
