Geneva McElhannon Bryson passed away peacefully at her home on April 21, 2019 after an extended illness. Geneva was born in Greensboro, GA on July 10, 1938 to Mozelle Turner McElhannon and Rufus McElhannon. Geneva was the eldest of four children. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Aubrey McElhannon, and husband Sidney. Geneva leaves behind two sisters, Lois West of Union Point and Brenda Pinkerton (Randy) of Eatonton; three daughters, Ellen Bryson (Frank Sweezey), Beth Bryson, Sydney Gill (Jeff), three grandsons: Mathew Sweezey, Jarad Taylor (Santele), and Aidan Gill; two step grandchildren Debra Sweezey and Michal Leland; and seven great grandchildren, Jaidan, Tyler, Cason and Kinsley Taylor, Jessica Bowden, Charlie and Ben Leland.
Geneva was a lifelong resident of Greene County. She graduated from Greene County High School in 1956, and married Sidney on June 17th of the same year. They were married for 62 years. Geneva was a loving mother, and a devoted grandmother. She cherished time with family, especially her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was an incredible cook and loved to entertain. She enjoyed playing golf, watching college basketball, and was avid GA Tech fan. She also enjoyed reading and gardening.
Geneva was a member of the Liberty United Methodist Church. She sang in the choir and used her joy for cooking to prepare meals for the sick and shut-ins.
The family would like to thank Compassionate Care Hospice for their services and staff. A special thanks to Oconee Home Health for their loving and attentive care givers Teresa Peek, Gale Chester, Sarah Alexander, and Shirley Wright. We really appreciate your years of faithful service to our mother. And a special thank you to private caregivers Leila Miller and Natasha Woods. You were all angels in disguise. Thank you for your care, love and support. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to Compassionate Care Hospice (Payable to Amedisys Foundation) in Athens GA, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
A Memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at Siloam United Methodist Church, 111 Church Street, Siloam, GA 30665 with Rev. Will Mathews officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Siloam Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until time for the service at the church. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
