Garnett Goodwin “Jack” Berrong, age 92, of Chamblee, GA died Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at Walton Regional Medical Center in Monroe, GA. Born in Greene County on May 9, 1919, he was the son of the late Charlie Grady Berrong and Mattie Lou Amerson Berrong. He attended school in Greene County and received his GED from the Army Air Corp. While serving his country in the United States Army Air Corp form October 1941 until December 1945, he received the American Defense Service Medal, American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. In December of 1945 he received an honorable discharge at the rank of T-Sergeant from the Army Air Force Base Unit. He was a salesman for McCormick and Company, Inc. retiring in 1985. As long as health permitted he was an active member of Northeast Baptist Church of Chamblee, GA where he lived from 1955 until his recent move to Great Oaks in Monroe, GA. Mr. Berrong was a member of the Clermont, South Carolina Masonic Lodge and a member emeritus of the Director’s Staff Yaarab Temple of Atlanta, GA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Leigh Melvin Berrong. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Ruth Berrong of Monroe, GA; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Graveside Services with military honors will be held on Friday, December 9, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Greensboro City Cemetery, Greensboro, GA with Rev. Brian Wright officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Larry Berrong, Al Berrong, Cannon Berrong, Zac Berrong, Chase Berrong, Jack Berrong, George North, Hunter Berrong, Shelby Whitlow, Andy Whitlow, Charles Green, Clayton Green, Goody Green and Woody Berrong. The family requests that any memorials be made to Kaleo Community Church, 3070 Mercer University Drive, Suite 100, Atlanta, GA 30341.
