Franklin Mills Obituary

Franklin H. Mills Mr. Franklin H. Mills, age 65, of 1130 Parrott’s Cove Road, Greensboro, formerly of Atlanta, passed away September 25, 2001. He was born October 9, 1935 at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia to Frank Sharp Mills and Dorothy Garner Mills. After graduating from Young Harris College in 1955, he joined the Naval Air Cadets and performed with the Naval Aviation Choir and a quartet within the choir at several beauty pageants including the Miss America Pageant and the Miss Universe Pageant. He also performed on the Ed Sullivan show and the Herb Shriner show, as well as for diverse audiences including church, nightclub, opera, operetta and recitals, and was a popular soloist at many weddings. He sang with notable singers such as Richard Tucker and Gabriella Tucci, under the baton of Maestro Fausta Cleva, and under the direction of Robert Shaw in the Atlanta Choral Guild and in the Atlanta Singers, and was tenor soloist at the Decatur First Presbyterian and the First Presbyterian Church of Macon, Georgia. After being commissioned as a pilot in the Marine Corps from 1957-1960, he worked for Life of Georgia Insurance Company before moving on to sell heavy construction machinery for Yancey Brothers Co. in Atlanta and Albert Equipment Co. in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He also partnered with Lamar Beasley in Macon, Georgia as owners of a road grading business and Jerald Phillips in Atlanta, Georgia as owners of Corsair International Ltd., selling heavy machinery. Recently retired to Lake Oconee, he spent many happy hours with all of his family and friends. He is survived by his wife Adora Wood Mills of Greensboro, Georgia; two sons, Michael E. Mills of Athens, Georgia and Mitchell L. Mills & wife Stephanie of Lilburn, Georgia; mother, Dorothy Garner Calhoun of Greensboro, Georgia; brother, Jere G. Mills & wife Bebe of Greensboro, Georgia; and three grandchildren, Matthew Alexander Mills, Julian Christopher Mills and Carter McKenzie Mills. He was preceded in death by his father Frank Sharp Mills. Few will be missed so much by so many. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, September 29, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro with Rev. Richard Chewning officiating. Burial will follow at Greensboro City Cemetery. Active Pallbearers are Bill Berry, Terry Jenkins, Lamar Beasley, Tony Eubanks, George Carter, Gabe Clavijo, Wade Parks and Peter Clay. Jerald Phillips will serve as an Honorary Pallbearer. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that memorials be made to your local chapter of the American Cancer Society or to the Franklin H. Mills Scholarship In Voice Fund in Care of the University of Georgia Foundation Building, Attention Bill Herringdine, Athens, Georgia 30602. The family will receive friends at the church Saturday from 12:00 noon until time for the service. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
