Francis Lloyd “Frank” Barnes, Jr.

Francis Lloyd “Frank” Barnes, Jr. of Union Point, GA died on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Athens Regional Medical Center at the age of 75. Born in Covington, GA on October 13, 1938, he was the son of the late Francis Lloyd Barnes, Sr. and Marguret Lee Malcolm Barnes. Frank graduated from Union Point High School in 1956 and the University of Georgia in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He served his country in the Army Reserves, and from 1966 until 1970, he worked on the missile tracking ships The Coastal Sentry and The Twin Falls based out of Orlando, FL for RCA.  During this time he married Jane on April 26, 1969, and they returned to Union Point to live.  For years he was the owner and operator of Barnes TV and Appliances in Union Point until its closing in 1990.  After that, he worked in electronics for Chipman Union. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Union Point and the Union Point Lions Club.  Frank was a lifelong ham radio operator, and he enjoyed playing the guitar and cutting wood. He not only flew airplanes himself, but he also taught others to fly.

In addition to his wife Jane Barnes of Union Point, GA, he is survived by two daughters, Julia Barnes and husband Tom Bavis of Rome, GA and Mary Katherine Barnes of Atlanta, GA; a son, Bud Barnes and wife Theodora Dragostinova of Bexley, OH; two brothers, Joseph Carl Barnes and Henry Malcolm Barnes; two sisters, Phyllis Barnes Ramsey and Lucy Barnes McDowell; grandchildren, Alex Barnes, Dani Barnes and KatyJane Bavis; and a number of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a son, Henry Jefferson “Hank” Barnes in September of 2006.

Services will be held Sunday, May 4, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 201 Veazey Street, Union Point, GA 30669 with Dr. James Choomack officiating. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Kopas Ogletree, Louis Phillips, Gene Lundy, Sibley Bryan, Stan MacIntosh, Kenny Portwood, Tom Bavis, and James Sewell.  The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall after the service.  The family requests that any memorials be made in memory of Francis Lloyd Barnes, Jr. to his son’s memorial scholarship: Georgia Tech Foundation, Inc., Henry Jefferson Barnes Memorial Scholarship, 760 Spring Street NW, Suite 400, Atlanta, GA 30308.  Callaway Funeral Home, 208 N.
