Frances Kerr Stephens Smith, age 87, of Union Point, Georgia, died on Saturday, November 28, 2009 at Saint Joseph''s at East Georgia Hospital in Greensboro. A native and lifelong resident of Greene County, Frances was born on August 18, 1922 to the late Joel Davidson Kerr and Mamie Gray Kerr. She graduated from Greensboro High School and was married to Benjamin Mell Stephens, Sr. who preceded her in death in 1960. She later married Allen B. Smith and together they ran A-1 Printing Company, where she was the bookkeeper for twenty-five years. Frances was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Union Point, where she served on numerous committees and taught Sunday School.
She was preceded in death by her second husband, Allen B. Smith in 1995; and siblings, Joel Davidson "Jake" Kerr, Robert "Bob" Kerr and James Kerr. She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Stephens Plaisted and husband Alynn of Birmingham, AL; a son Benjamin M. "Ben" Stephens of Atlanta, GA; a sister, Naomi Kerr Brown of Cochran, GA; two grandchildren, Kimberly Hillman and the late Jerry Hillman of Tuscaloosa, AL and Stephen Plaisted and wife Dana of Birmingham, AL; two great grandchildren, Caleb Plaisted and Hala Plaisted; a step great grandchild, Shaman Bonham; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 714 Park Avenue, Union Point, GA 30669 with Rev. Bert Mathews and Rev. Calvin Ward officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodville Cemetery, 1080 S. Chestnut Street, Woodville, GA 30669. Serving as pallbearers are Joel Brown, Joel Kerr, Jamie Brown, Robert Kerr, Al Frontz and Richard Cronic. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Garland Kerr, Ricky McCommons, Mike McCommons, Tim McCommons, Charles Stephens, Billy Stephens and Gene Stephens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday night at Callaway Funeral Home in Union Point. Callaway Funeral Home, 208 N.
