Mrs. Frances Taylor Brook Gunn, age 90, of Union Point, GA, died Thursday, August 13, 2009 at Saint Joseph''s at East Georgia Hospital in Greensboro. She was born December 7, 1918 in Clarke County to the late Doc Benjamin Taylor and Frances Ann Evelyn McElroy Taylor. Mrs. Gunn received her AB degree in Elementary Education from Tift College in Forsyth. She earned a Masters of Education at the University of Georgia as a reading specialist. After 47 years of service she retired from Union Point Elementary School as a Remedial Reading Teacher. At one time she taught in Anchorage, Alaska at a school called Chugach and at the University of Georgia as a demonstration teacher in the Education Department. She later taught for 10 years at Nathanael Greene Academy. Mrs. Gunn has influenced students in Greene County, Cobb County, Clarke County and in the state of Alaska.
Mrs. Gunn''s approach to teaching reading was varied and designed to engage a child''s interest. She used art and creative work to teach reading. Children enjoyed her class and looked forward to the time they spent in her room. Mrs. Gunn''s hope for education was that schools would provide environments for the students that would help the students to become well adjusted, happy and productive human beings.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Richard Gunn; a daughter, Carole Brook Askew; and three siblings. She is survived by two sons, Bobby Brook and wife Faye of Union Point, GA and Robert Richard Gunn of Union Point, GA; four grandchildren, Donna Askew Moon and husband Tommy of Greensboro, GA, Ben Askew and wife Debbie of Union Point, GA, Paula Brook of Greensboro, GA and Taylor Brook of Union Point, GA; two great grandchildren, Brook Moon and Ellie Askew; and many other relatives and friends.
Private Funeral Services will be held at her home in Union Point on Sunday, August 16, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert Robinson officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday night at Callaway Funeral Home.
