Eugenia "Gene" Veazey Obituary

Thelma Eugenia Stanley Veazey (Gene), age 90, moved peacefully to Heaven just after noon on December 20, 2019.

Mrs. Veazey was born on February 11, 1929 in Greensboro, GA, to Paul Randolph Stanley and Thelma McCommons Stanley. She was a life-long Georgia resident, proudly spending about 80 years of her life in her beloved Greene County. Mrs. Veazey graduated from the former Greensboro High School in 1946 as Salutatorian and President of the Senior Class. Within a few years' time, she married Charlton Strickland Veazey of Greensboro, graduated from the University of Georgia and began a career in education. As a teacher of High School English & Literature, Mrs. Veazey taught most of her years in Greene County, but also taught several years in Oconee County in Watkinsville, Stephens County in Toccoa, Wilkinson County in Irwinton, Putnam County in Eatonton. She became a favorite teacher wherever she taught and was chosen several times by STAR Students as their STAR Teacher.

In addition to educating young students, she showed her love for God and people by serving voluntarily in many organizations in her community, including the Greene County Chamber of Commerce, the Historical Society, and the First Baptist Church of Greensboro. At the church, she was a member and teacher of the Amicus Sunday School class and served in numerous other team and teaching roles. Mr. and Mrs. Veazey shared their love for their hometown and were charter members of the Greene County Heritage Commission and Greene County Veterans Committee and Co-chaired the 180th Anniversary at the First Baptist Church. They were named together as 1999 Citizens of the Year in "Appreciation for Outstanding Contributions to the Citizens of Greene County". To honor those who served our country in the military, Mrs. Veazey was instrumental in prompting the Georgia Legislature to name a portion of Athens Highway 15 as "Greene County Veteran's Highway".

The couple enjoyed traveling together and made trips across the United States and made several trips to Europe and the Caribbean. They were also loyal alumni of the University of Georgia and followed the "DAWGS" to many seasonal and post-seasonal football games through the years.

Most of all Gene loved her husband of 63 years, her family and her God. She came to saving faith in Jesus Christ as a child and lived out her life by His example in the way she best understood. She was loved and admired by many and was described by those who knew her well as "loving", "kind", "the sweetest lady", "beautiful inside and out", "loving mentor", "gracious Southern lady", "the loveliest person I've ever known." She is known in her family as their beloved Mother, Mama and "Bop-Bop".

Preceding Mrs. Veazey in death were her parents, a granddaughter Ashlin Faith Veazey, and her husband, Charlton. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Lynn & Larry Bowers of Greensboro, Charlton and Dawn Veazey of Macon and Jeanie & Frank Thomas of Hampton; her grandchildren Christopher Bowers and wife Andrea, Beth Bowers Abbott and husband Anthony, Laurelee Veazey Niswander and husband Paul, Erin Thomas, and Caroline Veazey and fiancé 2LT Evan Long-Quian, as well as great grandchildren Coleston Echols; Rhys, Finchley, and Penelope Abbott; and Catherine Niswander. She is also survived by a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, honorariums may be made to the Charlton and Eugenia Veazey Scholarship Fund for continuing education of Greene County students in care of Mary Jim Chapman at BankSouth, P.O.
