Elmer John Cullen

Elmer John Cullen, age 94, of Greensboro, GA, died Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Northridge Medical Center of Commerce, GA. Mr. Cullen was born on June 17, 1918 in Manor, PA to the late John William Cullen and Sadie Mildred Charlton Cullen. He graduated from Norwood High School and on September 10, 1940 he married the former Lois Christine Buzzard and at the time of her death in 1990 they had been married for nearly fifty years. He began his working career at Rockwell Manufacturing in Pittsburgh,PA and it was Rockwell that transferred him to Statesboro, GA when they opened a new plant in 1956. After a 33 year career at Rockwell, he left to join Equipment Controls Co in Norcross, GA where he worked an additional 13 years before retiring. After retirement and the loss of his wife he occupied himself by managing a snack bar at Georgia Southern University and became an honorary member and mentor for Delta Chi Fraternity. Elmer and his daughter, Pat, moved to Greensboro in 1995 from Statesboro. He was a dedicated Meals on Wheels volunteer for years, a volunteer for Circle of Friends Animal Society and assisted seniors in applying for AARP and other benefits. But what he was most proud of was helping the dogs by fostering or fund raising. Elmer was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Statesboro, past Master of the Statesboro Masonic Lodge where he received his 50 year pin, and an avid fan of Georgia Southern Eagles Football.

In addition to his wife, Lois Buzzard Cullen, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Jean Cullen Langham; grandson, Christopher Langham; and siblings, Donald Cullen and Eleanor Cullen Allshouse. Survivors include his daughters, Patricia Anne "Pat" Cullen of Greensboro, GA and Sandra Lee Cullen Deal and husband WR of Statesboro, GA; a granddaughter, Kimberly Deal; three grandsons, Richard Deal, Tony Langham and Walter Deal; ten great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren; a number of other relatives and many friends.

Memorial Services will be held, Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Hodges-Moore Chapel, 22757 Hwy 80 East, Statesboro, GA 30461. Inurnment will follow at Bulloch Memorial Gardens, 22002 Hwy 80 East, Statesboro, GA 30461. The family will receive friends from noon until time for the service at Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
