Edwin Gillard “Billy” Copelan, Sr., age 89, of Greensboro, GA, died Sunday, June 13, 2010 at Saint Joseph’s at East Georgia in Greensboro. Born on November 27, 1920 he was a native of Greene County and the son of the late Edgar Lucious Copelan and Callie Missouri Hale Copelan. He attended school at Meadowcrest and graduated from Greensboro High School in 1938. During World War II, he served his country in the United States Air Force in Germany receiving several medals. While growing up, he assisted his father on their farm planting, cultivating and harvesting such crops as cotton, corn, peanuts, hay, potatoes, beans, and other vegetables. He also cared for chickens, cattle and hogs and repaired farm equipment. Later he owned and operated his own dairy farm. He was a member of Walker United Methodist Church and a member of the VFW Adams Walker Post 4259 in Greensboro, GA. He enjoyed hunting especially quail.
He is survived by a daughter, Leann Copelan Bauch and husband Dave of Lawrenceville, GA; a son, Dr. Billy Copelan, Jr. and wife Lynn of Greensboro, GA; four grandchildren, Billy Copelan III and wife Christie of St. Simons, GA, Callie Copelan Luskus and husband Joe of Dacula, GA, Mary Jo Copelan Nugent and husband Penn of Raliegh, NC and Lucas Bauch of Lawrenceville, GA; eight great grandchildren, Carrie Copelan, Kendall Copelan, Mallory Luskus, Noah Luskus, Sarah Luskus, Harrison Nugent, Logan Nugent and Ansley Nugent; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Emma Agnes Copelan, J. T. Copelan, Broughton Copelan, Marcus Copelan, Edna McMichael, Josephine Copelan and Frances Bradley.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Walker United Methodist Church, 2730 Walker Church Road, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Rev. Wayne Usry and Rev. John Pike officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Lindy Copelan, Bruce Copelan, Russell Copelan, Ray Copelan, Jesse Copelan, Wayne Bradley, Ben Boswell, Robert Evans and Jim Malcolm. Honorary pallbearers are Comer Tolbert, M. H. Parrish, Clarence L. “Mutt” Rhodes Jr., Charles L. Copelan, Charlton S. Veazey Sr., Jerry Vandiver, Lewis Duvall, L. G. Boswell, Ray Duvall, Melvin Duvall and Wayne Bauch. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday night at McCommons Funeral Home.
