Edward Addison Hopkins passed January 16, 2007 at the age of 78. Edward was born February 23, 1928 to the late Mary Ann Brown Hopkins and Frank Hopkins, Sr. He was born in Hall County and resided in Washington, GA for a short time; he moved to Greene County at the age of five. After serving in the Navy, Edward married Mattie Julia Andrews Hopkins and they made Union Point their permanent residence. Many community members remember Edward as the "gas man" as he served in this role for 42 years with what is known, now, as Amerigas. Not only was he dedicated to his career, he was passionate about life. Edward was a strong family man who enjoyed spending time with his family. Much time spent with family centered around his primary hobby, gardening; many associate the name Edward Hopkins with his great green collards. Of utmost importance was his belief in God and his duty to pass these beliefs and values to his following generations. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Union Point, GA where he was last enrolled in the Goodwill Sunday School Class.
Edward is survived by his wife, Mattie Julia Andrews Hopkins; two sisters, Margaret Lundy and Frances Cantrell; two brothers, Frank Hopkins, Jr. and Roger Hopkins; a son, Edward Wayne Hopkins and wife Anna; a daughter, Betty Ann Watts and husband Mike; eight grandchildren, Kim Leach and husband Russell, Brad Watson and wife Scarlett, Amy Yearwood and husband Adam, Kelly Coleman and husband Allen, Shelly Coleman and husband Grant, Michele Barrett and husband Bryan, Jeremy Watts and Beth Patrick and husband Jeff; seven great grandchildren, Courtney and Noah Watson, Ethan Yearwood, Morgan Leach, Heather Patrick, Caroline and Whit Barrett; and a host of other family and friends.
Along with his parents, Edward is preceded in death by one sister, Kathryn Hopkins Arthur.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, January 19, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Union Point, GA with Rev. Leonard Ezell officiating. The pallbearers will include Kenneth Cato, Gene Lundy, Larry Lundy, Dean McDonald, Ricky Newsom and Bud Thornton. The Goodwill Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church of Union Point has been asked to serve as honorary pallbearers. Graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery in Union Point, GA following the church service The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursday night, January 18, 2007 at McCommons Funeral Home in Greensboro, GA.
