Eda Murphy Obituary

Eda Elaine Jones Murphy, age 97, of Greensboro, GA and Fernandina Beach, FL, formerly of Orlando, FL, passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle, GA.

She was born in Utica, Nebraska on July 22, 1913, the daughter of the late Raymond Wesley Jones and Ethel Hannah Jones. She graduated from Utica High School at the age of sixteen, attended Nebraska Wesleyan College for one year and then transferred to the University of Nebraska School of Nursing in Omaha, NE. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing in 1934.

On September 4, 1940, Eda married William Seymour Murphy, of Florence, SD, in Reno, NV. Their first duty station as a married couple was Honolulu, Hawaii. William (Bill) was a Gunner''s Mate Chief, assigned to the battleship, USS Nevada, stationed at Pearl Harbor with the US Pacific Fleet. Along with his brother, James Murphy, also assigned to the USS Nevada, all three survived the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

She began her working career as a Registered Nurse for Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Los Angeles, CA. While her husband was stationed in Hawaii, during World War II, she worked at Queen''s Hospital, in Honolulu. After leaving Honolulu, she continued her nursing career at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA for the duration of the war. The Murphys retired to Orlando, FL in 1957, and enjoyed life there for 48 years. Eda was a member of Goss Memorial Methodist Church in Orlando. In 2003 she moved to Greensboro and lived with her daughter and son-in-law for the past seven years. She was an avid reader, loved pro football and basketball, and enjoyed her hammock overlooking the lake.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William S. Murphy, in 1995; as well as siblings, Lita J. Shirley, Dale R. Jones, Glen G. Jones, and Jeneve DeCorsi. She is survived by her daughter, Eda Elaine Murphy Huenink, and son-in-law, Alvin John Huenink of Fernandina Beach, FL and Greensboro, GA; two grandchildren, Jeremy A. Tallant, of McDonough, GA and Jenna L. Colman and her husband Chad, of Gainesville, FL; a great-grandchild, Asher Evan Colman; and a number of other relatives and friends.

In accordance with her wishes there will be no memorial service. Her interment will be in Bushnell, Sumter County, Florida at Florida National Cemetery, where she will join her beloved husband, Bill.
