Dr. John Fred Hunter Sr., age 82, prominent Greensboro businessman died Friday, August 8, 2003, at Emory University Hospital following a brief illness. Affectionately known as "Doc", he was born on May 10, 1921 in Greene County to the late John Fred Hunter and Jeffie Lee Baugh Hunter. He graduated from Greensboro High School in 1938 and attended the University of Georgia before graduating from the Southern School of Pharmacy. During World War II, he served in the Army Medical Core. Returning to Greensboro after World War II in December of 1945, he ran Hunter''s Drugstore for a number of years. After serving as city councilman, he was elected Mayor of Greensboro for two terms from 1962 to 1970. He was a director at the Bank of Greensboro for many years and a member of the Lions Club. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro where he attended the Men''s Sunday School Class. In 1996 he represented Greene County as a torchbearer for the Olympics. He was a loyal, faithful and kind friend to all, working all hours of the day to see that the people of his community got the medicine and medical care they needed. Never meeting a stranger, he was the epitome of a true "Southern Gentleman".
He is survived by his wife, Martha Stephens Hunter of Greensboro, GA; a son, John Fred Hunter Jr. and wife Nancy of Greensboro, GA; a daughter, Laura Lee Hunter of Athens, GA.; a sister, Margaret Hunter Richards of Greensboro, GA; five grandchildren, Jennifer Hannay, April Ecker, John Higdon, Melody Hunter and John Hunter; two great grandsons, Matthew Hannay and William Hannay.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday, August 10, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro with Rev. Richard Chewning officiating. Burial will follow in Greensboro City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Dan Jones, Cotton Boswell, Jack Eubanks, Charles Bryant, Larry Smith, and Rick Ward. Honorary pallbearers are Ford Boston, L.Y. Kenimer, Dr. Lee Parker, Charles Copelan, Carey Williams Jr. and Dr. W.H. Rhodes Jr. The family requests that any memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 216, Greensboro, GA 30642. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday night at the Funeral Home. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W. Broad St., Greensboro, GA, (706) 453-2626, is in charge of arrangements.
