Dr. Arthur Joseph Hill, Jr

Dr. Arthur Joseph Hill, Jr., age 87, died Saturday, June 10, 2006 at his residence near Greensboro, GA. He was born on October 24, 1918 in New Haven, CT, and was the son of Arthur Joseph Hill, Sr. and Helen Rice Hill. Dr. Hill graduated from Hopkins High School in New Haven, CT and later received his Bachelor of Science and Doctorate in Chemistry at Yale University in 1943. Arthur was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma Fraternity, American Institute of Chemistry, American Nuclear Society, and the Yale Chapter of Gamma Alpha Graduate Fraternity. Arthur was a Fellow of the American Association of Advancement of Sciences. He was an accredited Professional Chemist. Arthur helped establish a memorial for Nurses in the Armed Forces of World War II. Arthur was recognized for donating 32 pints of blood to the Red Cross in 1971. He was the coach for the Akien swim and dive team. He went to work as chemist for Dupont in Delaware and was later transferred to the Savannah River Plant where he retired in 1984. He served with the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Augusta for 30 years and was past Commander of Flotilla 21. Arthur was a member of the United States Power Squadron on the Savannah River. He was also a member of the Photographic Society of America. When he was 65, he obtained his Scuba Diving certification. In the 1980''s and 1990''s he taught boat safety classes on Clark Hill Lake and Lake Oconee. He was a member of Walker United Methodist Church.

Arthur is survived by his sister, Dottie Crowe; three daughters, Lynn Meier, Pat Morris, Sue Helmkin; son, Kenneth Hill; and four grandchildren.

Services will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Walker United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Gillespie officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family requests that any memorials be made to the Coast Guard Auxiliary or Walker United Methodist Church, 2730 Walker Church Road, Greensboro, GA 30642.
