Dorothy Hazel Hamer Spilsbury

Dorothy Hazel Hamer Spilsbury, 95, a native of Ogden, Utah and a longtime resident of Greensboro died on Friday, August 7, 2009 at Athens Regional Medical Center. Born on November 25, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Hazelton George Hamer and Gezina Smitt Hamer. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1932 and attended Weber State University. Dorothy met her sweetheart, Berkeley J. Spilsbury, and they were married on August 21, 1938 in Ogden, Utah. She retired as a seamstress from Ogden Utah Knitting Company. Berk was an employee of the U. S. Forest Service and the family lived in many locations throughout the Southern United States. Upon retirement from the Forest Service Dorothy and Berk decided to purchase a home in Greensboro, GA and settle here. Berk passed away suddenly on Christmas Day in 1984. Mrs. Spilsbury has been involved in many civic organizations in Greensboro such as the Meadowcrest Club and Greensboro Garden Club. As long as health permitted, she was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro. She was a creative seamstress who loved to quilt, make and repair dolls, make pillows and many other things. Mrs. Spilsbury had made her home at Willow Run Retirement Home for a number of years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Berkeley James Spilsbury; a son, James Russell Spilsbury; and siblings, Ronald Hamer, Richard Hamer, and Margaret Mowbray. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Christiansen and husband Dennis of Palm Harbor, FL; a son, Thomas Spilsbury and wife Twinkie of Lilburn, GA; a brother, Robert Hamer of Stockton, CA; seven grandchildren, Sarah Hertig, Becky Chapman, Emily Camp, Gary Christiansen, Dot Kitchen, Jill Peterson and Jennie Stultz; eighteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro with Rev. Dr. James Choomack and Rev. Stephen Jackson officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Tom Spilsbury, Dennis Christiansen, Tim Peterson, Casey Camp and Seth Chapman. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday night at McCommons Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Greenview Cemetery.
