Dorothy Ann Speckhard Peters, 84, of Greensboro, Georgia died Sunday, September 11, 2005 at Willow Run Retirement Home. A native of Saginaw, Michigan, she was born on August 7, 1921 to the late Evon Speckhard and Olga Riedel Speckhard. Mrs. Peters attended Michigan State University. In addition to living in Saginaw MI, she lived in Vassar, MI and Battle Creek, MI before moving to Mentor-on-the-Lake, OH where she lived for 20 years. After raising three children she returned to complete her education in social work and graduated from Lake Erie College in Painesville, OH. Mrs. Peters worked as a social worker at the V.A. Hospital in Brecksville, Ohio and was actively involved in the community projects notably supporting the formation of Lakeland Community College and changing state mental health laws. After retiring to Tega Cay, SC she volunteered with Tega Cay Rescue Squad and teaching adults to read. She had lived in Greene County at Willow Run Retirement Home since 1998 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro and attended the Sunday morning devotional service sponsored by Lake Oconee Presbyterian Church.
She was married to Russell T. Peters for over 50 years. Together they enjoyed family, friends, and were active in each community where they lived, particularly Mentor-on-the-Lake, OH and Tega Cay, SC.
Survivors include three sons, John M. Peters (Glenda) of Greensboro, GA, James R. Peters (Pat) of Willoughby, OH and Jeffrey S. Peters (Vicki) of Angola, IN; a sister Margaret Speckhard Simpson of Portland, OR; eight grandchildren, Dr. Brandon Peters (Dr. Romsel) of Augusta, GA, Bragan Peters (Lynette) of Union Point, GA, Brett Peters of Greensboro, GA, James M. Peters (Erika) of Las Vegas, NV, Scott B. Peters (Michelle) of Perry, OH, Andrew T. Peters of Cheboygan, MI, Courtney P. Miller (Matthew) of Goshen, IN and Caitlin Peters of Angola, IN; four great grandchildren, Dylan and Madison Peters of Augusta, GA, and Bradley and Calvin Peters of Perry, OH.. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell T. Peters; and two brothers, Arthur Speckhard and Robert Speckhard.
A memorial service will be held at Willow Run Retirement Home on September 24, 2005, at 3:00PM with Rev. Richard Chewning, Rev. Ira McKeever and Cliff Graham officiating. The family requests that any memorials be made to Tega Cay Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 3399, Tega Cay, SC 29715.
