Dorothy Jiaconia Obituary

Dorothy Evelyn Jiaconia (February 25, 1912 – December 1, 2017

Dorothy Evelyn Jiaconia passed away on Friday December 1, 2017 at the age of 105 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law.

Dorothy was born on February 25, 1912 in Chicago IL to Winifred (nee Scanlon) Burns and William H. Burns. She was the third of the Burns children and lived most of her adult life in both Union and Forked River, NJ. She moved to Greensboro, GA in 2007. Dorothy had one brother, Henry Burns, and a sister Helen Reynolds, both of whom preceded her in death.

As a very young girl, Dorothy and her siblings lived with relatives in Painted Post, NY and Susquehanna, Pennsylvania until her father remarried and then moved the family to NJ where he had found full time employment.

In her mid teens Dorothy began her working career as a Long Distance Telephone Operator for New Jersey Bell Telephone Company. She continued to work in that capacity for many years eventually leaving to become a stay at home mom in 1946. She returned to work in 1960 becoming a Switchboard Operator for various private companies and eventually retiring in December of 1984 while working for MidLantic Mortgage in Newark, NJ.

In the early 1930's while attending a church dance she met Joseph A. Jiaconia who was working for the Prudential Insurance Company.  Their courtship began shortly thereafter and they eventually married on September 23, 1934 in Newark, NJ.

Joe and Dot (as she was referred to by many relatives) initially rented an apartment and lived in Irvington, NJ until they purchased their first home in Union, NJ in 1940. Dorothy was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and wonderful homemaker who loved to cook and bake. Once retired, she enjoyed reading, knitting and playing a small number of board games.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Joseph, who passed away in February, 1991.  Dorothy is survived by her son Robert and his wife Mary Ann, of Greensboro, GA. Her granddaughter, Meredith Loman and her husband Eric of Eatontown, NJ, a grandson Brandon Jiaconia of Brooklyn, NY and her great granddaughter Lila Evelyn Loman also of Eatontown, NJ.
