Dane Edwin Birdsong, 77, of Greensboro, GA died Saturday, June 5, 2004 at Georgia War Veterans Home in Augusta. He was born in Greene County on August 8, 1926 to the late Albert Carvel Birdsong and Annie Mae Raley Birdsong. A graduate of Greensboro High School, he lettered in track, basketball, baseball and football. During World War II he served in the United States Navy in the invasion of Okinawa and drove a landing craft. After the war he worked for Thomas Pulp Wood. Later he was a manager at Mary Leila Cotton Mill where he oversaw the carding and spinning departments for many years and a manager at Wellington Puritan. In his spare time he loved to fish and hunt. Mr. Birdsong was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro.

He is survived by his loving wife, Doris Boswell Birdsong of Greensboro, GA, a daughter, Dana Birdsong Holloway and husband Paige of Thomaston, GA; two grandchildren, Bryson Holloway and Raley Holloway; and a number of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, June 7, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Greensboro with Rev. Farrett Boswell and Rev. Dr. Norman Waldrip officiating. Burial will follow at Penfield Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers are Ralph Boswell, Pete Boswell, Benjie Boswell, Drew Boswell, David Boswell, Jay Boswell and John Boswell. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Charlton Veazey, Cotton Boswell, Darrel Phelps, Harold Glass, Frank Hopkins, C. L. "Mutt" Rhodes Jr. and George Thomas. The family requests that any memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Greensboro, 202-C South Main Street, Greensboro, Georgia 30642 or the Georgia War Veterans Home of Augusta, 1101 15th Street, Augusta, Georgia 30901-3104.
