Dale Coffed Obituary

Dale Harrison Coffed

Dale Harrison Coffed, age 95, of Stone Mountain, GA passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at Pebblebrook at Park Springs in Stone Mountain.  He was born November 11, 1923 in Depew, NY, the son of the late Earl John Coffed and Elizabeth Wilhelminia Brandenberger Coffed.  After graduating from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1949, he married the former Elizabeth “Boots” Beede on June 11, 1949 in Albany, NY.  As a young 18-year old he worked in the NY Central Railroad in the control tower directing rail traffic. In October 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp which later became the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1945 after serving as a Bomber Pilot in World War II. He remained in the Reserves until 1955.  His first job after the war was with Playtex Corporation where he worked on facemasks for the early astronauts. He then enjoyed a 31-year career with DuPont as a chemical engineer where he was responsible for obtaining several patents. Upon retirement Dale and Boots moved from Fairfield, CT to Lake Oconee in Greene County.  During his time in Greensboro he was a faithful and active member of the First United Methodist Church and a volunteer fireman at 80 years old.  After living 22 years in Greensboro, they relocated to Park Springs Retirement Community in Stone Mountain.  He was a prolific and incredible wood worker, loved refinishing antiques, and working in his rose garden.  He was a constant learner of American History with a focus on the American Civil War. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed golf and supporting his family's involvement in sports, but the love of his family was most important.

Dale is survived by his wife of seventy years, Elizabeth “Boots” Coffed of Stone Mountain, GA; sons, Douglas Coffed (Jaime) of Atlanta, GA and Steven J. Coffed (Erin) of Fort Worth, Texas; grandchildren: Douglas James Coffed of Bentonville, AR, Kelly Coffed Schill of Atlanta, GA, Mary Coffed Allman of Denver, CO, Kelly Coffed Smith of Los Angeles, CA, Austin Coffed of Fort Worth, TX and Hailee Coffed of Fort Worth, TX; eight great-grandchildren and many, many friends.
