George Curtis Whittaker
George Curtis Whittaker, age 85, of the Macedonia Community of Greene County, died Monday, March 2, 2015. A lifelong resident of Greene County, he was born on February 23, 1930 to the late William Dubois Whittaker and Vera Maxey Whittaker. He attended school in Penfield until the ninth grade and graduated from Greensboro High School. After high school he joined the United States Navy and served in the Korean War. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, he graduated from the University of Georgia in 1958. During this time he worked for McCommons Funeral Home. In 1969 he taught at Nathanael Greene Academy in Siloam and then taught at Gatewood in Eatonton for 23 years from 1970 to 1993. After his father’s death he became the caretaker for the Penfield Cemetery working under Mercer University. After retirement in 1993 he once again worked for McCommons Funeral Home, where he was working at the time of his death. He lived in Penfield for 50 years and most recently had moved back to his home place in Macedonia. He enjoyed reading, word search and crossword puzzles and most of all he enjoyed fishing with his buddies. Curtis attended Penfield Baptist Church, where he was the treasurer for many years. Curtis will be greatly missed by a multitude of friends and loved ones.
Survivors include his nephews, James Whittaker and wife Robin of Eatonton, GA and Torrey Whittaker and wife Rena’ of Eatonton, GA; great nephews and great niece, Jason Whittaker of Washington State, Brenton Whittaker and wife Jamie of Milledgeville, GA and Kristina Mashburn and husband Ryan of Godfrey, GA; great, great niece and great, great nephew, Olivia Mashburn and Zackery Mashburn; fishing buddies, Robert Huff and Ralph Huff; and many, many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Gene Whittaker and his beloved dog, Skipper.
Funeral Services will be held, Thursday, March 5, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Penfield Baptist Church, 1061 Mercer Circle, Penfield, GA 30669 with Rev. David Jordan officiating. Interment will follow in the Penfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at McCommons Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers are Jimmy Burt, John Colclough, Jimmy English, Sam Patrick, Ralph Huff and Robert Huff.
