Clarence "Mutt" Lee Rhodes, Jr.

Clarence Lee “Mutt” Rhodes, Jr., 92, of Siloam, GA, died Tuesday May 28, 2019. Born May 10, 1927, he was the son of Clarence Lee Rhodes, Sr. and Cleo Kendrick Rhodes.

Mutt attended elementary and junior high school in Siloam and graduated from Greensboro High School in 1944.  He began his secondary education at Emory University at Oxford and in 1949 graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Business Administration.  He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific theater. On October 20, 1950, he married the former Jane Chandler of Greensboro. 

As a tree farmer, Mutt worked with C. L. Rhodes Lumber, Co. and later Rhodes Timber for over 50 years. The family business was recognized by the Greene County Chamber of Commerce as Agri-Business of the year in 2008. He was a member of Forest Landowners Association, American Tree Farm System, and Georgia Forestry Association, serving on GFA’s Board of Directors for over 25 years. For more than 40 years he served as Mayor of Siloam. Some of the progress made during his tenure as mayor include forming the fire department and building a city water system. He was Sunday School Superintendent for 29 years at Siloam Baptist Church where he was a member most of his life. He later joined Greensboro First United Methodist Church. 

Evidence of his deeply rooted commitment to community, Mutt served as President of the Greene County Chamber of Commerce, on the Greene County Board of Education, and Chairman of Minnie G. Boswell Hospital Authority. He was also on the Board of Directors of Northeast Georgia RDC, serving as Chairman in 1970. Mutt truly enjoyed his time as President of the Greene County Jaycees and President of Jaycees Tenth District.  He served on the original Board of Trustees of Nathanael Greene Academy. He was Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Greene County (later Greene Putnam Counties). He also participated in a number of other local clubs and organizations.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Jane Chandler Rhodes; daughter, Suzan Rhodes Harris, sons, Clarence Lee Rhodes III (Cathy) and Boyd Chandler “Andy” Rhodes; grandchildren, Kendrick Harris Ward (Joey), Benjamin Chandler Harris (Hannah), Clarence Lee “Chance” Rhodes, IV (Kara) and Sloan Rhodes Dobrin (Ryan); great grandchildren, Addie Louise Ward, Rhodes Lanier Ward, Watson Bryant Dobrin and Nora Janine Rhodes; relatives and many friends across the state. 

Graveside Services will be held Thursday, May 30, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the Siloam Cemetery, Church Street, Siloam, GA 30665 with a Celebration of his Life following at the First United Methodist Church, 202 W. Broad Street, Greensboro, GA 30642 with the Reverends Mike Morgan, Hugh Hendrickson, and Ed Nelson officiating. The family will receive friends in the Family Life Center following the service.  Memorials may be made to the Georgia Forestry Foundation, P. O. Box 1217, Forsyth, GA 31029.
