Charlie Aaron Piland, age 75, of Union Point, GA, died Saturday, August 18, 2007 at Athens Regional Medical Center. Born in Quitman County, Georgia on January 4, 1932, he was the son of the late Charlie Shadrick Piland and Mildred Frances Evans Piland. He graduated from Union Point High School and on February 26, 1953 he married Mae Moss. He then served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean Conflict. After serving his country he returned to Union Point and worked as manager for Rutherford''s Grocery Store later becoming the owner. He ran the Woodville Pantry for six years and worked as manager for M & G Service Station in Union Point. Charlie was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Union Point. A big sports fan he loved baseball especially watching the Atlanta Braves and enjoyed keeping up with the Georgia Bulldogs.

He is survived by his wife, of fifty-four years, Mae Moss Piland of Union Point, GA; two daughters, Barbara Piland Gunn and husband Mike of Madison, GA and Janet Piland Sisk of Union Point, GA; a sister, Grace P. Langford of Warrenton, GA; a granddaughter, Jessica Gunn; two nephews; a great niece; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sara P. Hunnicut.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Union Point with Rev. Leonard Ezell, Rev. Mike Pritchett and Rev. John Wheeles officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodville Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Ricky Newsom, Joe Newsom, Richard Newsom, Gene Lindsey, Freddie Walker, Paul Jackson and Harold Finch. The family requests that any memorials be made to the First Baptist Church, 206 Thornton Street, Union Point, GA 30669.
